Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rose 2016
Tasting Notes

This Rosé was made from estate grown Pinot Noir and Shiraz grapes.

September 2015 welcomed the beginning of budburst leading to a dry and warm spring. October was 3 degrees above the average temperature and El Niño affected the amount of rain we received. Vine vigour was controlled due to the lack of rainfall with the canopy generous and open. Fruitfulness was up from the previous vintage and flowering and fruit set occurred unhindered. Veraison commenced in early January.

The period between January and mid-March was warmer than historically usual and harvest began at the same time in February as recent vintages. Conditions remained very dry and warm throughout the harvest period, it was a compact vintage finishing in mid-March. The viticultural team worked steadily throughout harvest and delivered healthy and energetic fruit, with ripeness and acidity well balanced.

The fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermented without yeast inoculation in a mix of old French oak barriques and concrete tank. Once dry, the wine was left sur lie for several months prior to bottling.

Tasting Note - September 2016

The 2016 Salasso is coloured a pale copper, with a nose that delivers light red berry and citrus aromas intertwined with ginger and fresh cream. The palate, full of delicate strawberry and red currant flavours along with some spicier notes, leads into a softly weighted texture underpinned with fine acidity and excellent length.

Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rose 2016

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2018

Salmon-pink with the barest hint of copper, this is racy, dry, exhilarating rose, fermented naturally in a combination of used barrels. A blend of 69% pinot noir and 31% shiraz, this provides thrills with a chill! Sweet and sour red fruits pop across the mouth, all strung across a bow of crunchy acidity, mineral timbre and tangy orange zest lifting the finish.

The colour is somewhat forward-developed light pink, the bouquet pinot-esque and developed with some meaty notes. It’s light, lean and pared-back with drive and persistence. Barrel work adds to flavour complexity and enhances texture. Very smart.

It’s soft and fleshy with freeze dried strawberries, rosehip, nuts and a little spice, perhaps some blackcurrant and herb too. Light to medium bodied, flows along beautifully with its smooth delivery of flavour, freshened with a little blood orange tang, savoury and gently chalky with a dry and vinous finish of fine length. Top shelf.
